Stability AI Secures $76 Million in Funding to Propel Stable Diffusion and AI Innovations
Stability AI, the company known for its AI image generation model, Stable Diffusion, has successfully raised $76 million in Series B funding. This latest funding round elevates its total raised to $232 million.
On Tuesday, the company revealed that the new capital includes investments from several major players in the entertainment industry, such as Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Electronic Arts (EA). Additionally, investment firms AMD Ventures and Pacific Alliance Ventures contributed to the funding.
Prem Akkaraju, CEO of Stability AI since 2024, expressed that this funding serves as confirmation of the company’s vision to empower creators, including producers, musicians, and storytellers, through generative AI technologies.
The funds will be allocated towards further expanding Stability’s "creative production" product lineup, while also enhancing its professional services. Currently, the company provides a range of AI models dedicated to music, video, and image generation.
Founded in 2019, Stability AI has been actively forging partnerships with entertainment firms to integrate generative AI into creative processes. Last year, it formed alliances with Universal Music and Electronic Arts and partnered with Warner Music, allowing these companies to co-develop AI tools alongside Stability instead of merely licensing the resulting content.
In addition to its growth, Stability AI has navigated legal challenges successfully. A UK court ruled in the company’s favor regarding a copyright lawsuit from Getty Images, which accused it of infringing IP rights by using Getty’s images for training its image generation model. However, a similar lawsuit from Getty in the U.S. is still pending.
Moreover, the company faced a lawsuit in 2023 from co-founder Cyrus Hodes, who claimed he was misled by fellow co-founder Emad Mostaque into selling his stake in the firm.
