Flock Safety, a surveillance technology company, has recently taken steps to reduce its workforce by offering “generous” severance packages for voluntary employee buyouts. This initiative comes in response to significant backlash against the company, particularly concerning its license plate recognition technology. Flock anticipates that a substantial number of its 1,500 employees will take advantage of this offer, claiming it is the “most generous” package they have ever provided.
The motivation behind this voluntary departure strategy is to navigate the current challenges the company faces due to public and internal dissension. Reports indicate that without these buyouts, Flock would likely need to implement layoffs, particularly as the negative sentiment has heavily affected employee morale.
Compounding Flock’s troubles, an investigation by The Washington Post uncovered instances where police officers misused the company’s technology for personal gain, including stalking former partners. This led to several states, including Florida and Texas, halting their use of Flock’s services. The momentum against the company heightened as an anti-surveillance advocacy group reported that 90 cities dropped contracts with Flock in August, a fourfold increase compared to the previous month.
In light of these issues, Flock’s CEO Garrett Langley acknowledged in a recent podcast that the backlash has significantly impacted internal morale, stressing the importance of addressing these problems adequately.
