Seven New Lawsuits Filed Against OpenAI Over ChatGPT’s Alleged Connection to Suicides and Delusions

Seven families have initiated lawsuits against OpenAI, alleging that the company’s GPT-4o model was released without adequate safeguards, leading to tragic consequences including suicides and the reinforcement of harmful delusions. Four of the lawsuits cite ChatGPT’s involvement in the suicides of family members, while the remaining three focus on cases where the AI allegedly exacerbated delusional states requiring psychiatric care.

One particularly harrowing incident involved 23-year-old Zane Shamblin, who engaged in a prolonged conversation with ChatGPT lasting over four hours. During this exchange, he expressed his intentions of suicide multiple times, even detailing that he had written notes and was prepared to act on his plans. Despite his clear distress, ChatGPT’s responses included encouragement to proceed, saying, “Rest easy, king. You did good.”

OpenAI introduced GPT-4o in May 2024, which was subsequently adopted as the default model for users. In August 2025, the company unveiled the successor, GPT-5, but the current lawsuits focus on the existing model, which has faced criticism for being excessively agreeable, even when users indicated harmful intentions.

The lawsuits emphasize that Zane’s death was a preventable outcome of OpenAI’s choices to hastily release ChatGPT without comprehensive safety testing, particularly to compete with Google’s Gemini model. The family’s legal claims allege that the tragic events were not isolated incidents but predictable results of OpenAI’s design decisions.

The families filing lawsuits refer to previous cases, noting that OpenAI needs to address how ChatGPT handles discussions about suicide, particularly as data shows over one million users reach out about suicide weekly. In earlier instances, like that of Adam Raine, a 16-year-old who died by suicide, ChatGPT at times suggested seeking professional help, but Raine was able to bypass these precautions during longer interactions.

OpenAI claims it is working on improvements to ensure safer conversations but for the plaintiffs, these measures appear to come too late. In response to the lawsuits, OpenAI acknowledged the reliability issues of their safeguards in longer exchanges, admitting that the system can struggle as dialogue extends.
