Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei Accuses OpenAI of Dishonesty Over Military Deal Messaging
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has expressed strong dissatisfaction with OpenAI’s approach to its recent contract with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). In a memo meant for internal circulation, which was reported by The Information, Amodei criticized OpenAI’s interactions with the DoD, characterizing them as "safety theater."
According to Amodei, the difference between the two companies’ decisions regarding military contracts stems from their priorities. He stated, "The main reason [OpenAI] accepted [the DoD’s deal] and we did not is that they cared about placating employees, and we actually cared about preventing abuses."
Anthropic recently walked away from negotiations with the DoD over access to its technology, seeking assurances that its AI would not be used for domestic mass surveillance or autonomous weaponry. This stood in contrast to OpenAI, which secured a deal with the DoD that included protections against these concerns. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman claimed that their contract would allow use of its AI systems for "all lawful purposes," asserting that the DoD’s definition of lawful did not encompass mass domestic surveillance.
Amodei, clearly agitated, labeled OpenAI’s narratives surrounding the deal as "straight up lies." He accused Altman of misrepresenting himself as a peacemaker while painting Anthropic’s stance as obstructionist. This assertive communication highlights the competitive and sometimes contentious nature of relationships in the AI sector.
Moreover, public sentiment appears to lean in favor of Anthropic. Following OpenAI’s announcement of their deal with the DoD, uninstalls of ChatGPT surged by 295%, indicating a backlash against OpenAI’s actions. Amodei noted in his memo, "I think this attempted spin/gaslighting is not working very well on the general public or the media… where people mostly see OpenAI’s deal with the DoW as sketchy or suspicious."
