Recently, Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed a number of organizational changes and leadership shifts designed to enhance the company’s AI endeavors.

The reorganization involves the Gemini app team, headed by Sissie Hsiao, becoming part of Google DeepMind, which is under the direction of Demis Hassabis.

“Uniting these teams will enhance feedback mechanisms, facilitate the rapid deployment of our new models within the Gemini app, streamline our post-training processes, and leverage our existing product momentum,” Pichai elaborated.

Moreover, the teams dedicated to devices and home experiences will be merged into the Platforms & Devices division. This restructuring is intended to better synchronize these teams with the product surfaces they are creating and to unify AI smart home efforts at Google under one cohesive framework.

Prabhakar Raghavan, who has been with Google for 12 years, will shift from his current position to serve as the Chief Technologist at Google. Pichai commended Raghavan’s contributions, noting his leadership across numerous divisions such as Research, Workspace, Ads, and Knowledge & Information (K&I).

“Prabhakar’s journey at Google has been extraordinary,” Pichai remarked. “He directed the Gmail team in the rollout of Smart Reply and Smart Compose as some of the initial examples of utilizing AI to enhance products, and helped Gmail and Drive surpass one billion users.”

Taking charge of the K&I division will be Nick Fox, a long-time Googler and member of Raghavan’s leadership team. Fox’s elevation to SVP of K&I follows his extensive experience across various areas of the company, including Product and Design in Search and Assistant, along with Shopping, Travel, and Payments products.

“Nick has played a crucial role in defining Google’s AI product strategy while working closely with Prabhakar and his leadership team on K&I’s approach,” Pichai remarks. “I often rely on Nick to address our toughest product challenges, and he consistently makes strides with determination, speed, and a positive outlook.”

This restructuring coincides with a wave of AI-driven innovations throughout Google’s product range. Noteworthy advancements include the tremendous popularity of NotebookLM with Audio Overviews, improvements in information discovery via Search and Lens, the introduction of a redesigned Google Shopping experience suited for the AI age, pioneering developments like AlphaProteo that has the potential to transform protein design, and updates regarding the Gemini model series.

Pichai also noted a landmark achievement in Google’s healthcare AI projects, sharing that their AI solution for identifying diabetic retinopathy has performed 600,000 screenings so far. The company aims to broaden access to this technology throughout India and Thailand.

“AI is advancing at a speed unmatched by any previous technology. In order to sustain this pace of progress, we’ve been implementing changes to streamline our structures,” Pichai elaborated.
