IBM recently unveiled its most advanced series of AI models to date, named Granite 3.0, during the company’s annual TechXchange event.
The Granite 3.0 series features a variety of models tailored for different uses:
IBM asserts that its new 8B and 2B language models can compete with or exceed the performance of similarly sized models from top providers across a wide range of academic and industry benchmarks. These models are designed to be versatile tools for enterprise AI, particularly excelling in tasks such as Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), classification, summarization, and entity extraction.
A significant aspect that sets the Granite 3.0 family apart is IBM’s dedication to open-source AI. The models are made available under the Apache 2.0 license, providing an exceptional mix of performance, flexibility, and independence for both enterprise clients and the wider AI community.
IBM posits that by integrating a compact Granite model with exclusive enterprise data, particularly through the innovative InstructLab alignment technique, businesses can achieve task-oriented performance that rivals larger models, all at a considerably reduced cost. Initial proofs-of-concept indicate potential savings of up to 23 times compared to large frontier models.
Transparency and safety are central to IBM’s AI strategy. The company has released a technical report and a responsible use guide for Granite 3.0, outlining the datasets utilized, data processing methods, and benchmark results. Furthermore, IBM provides IP indemnity for all Granite models on its watsonx.ai platform, giving enterprises added assurance when blending these models with their own data.
The Granite 3.0 8B Instruct model has demonstrated particularly impressive outcomes, surpassing comparable open-source models from Meta and Mistral on standard academic evaluations. Additionally, it excels across all assessed safety dimensions on IBM’s AttaQ safety benchmark.
IBM is launching the Granite Guardian 3.0 models, which are crafted to establish safety guardrails by reviewing user prompts and LLM responses for potential risks. These models provide an extensive array of risk and harm detection capabilities, including specialized checks for RAG-specific concerns such as groundedness and context relevance.
The complete collection of Granite 3.0 models is accessible for download on HuggingFace, with options for commercial use through IBM’s watsonx platform. Moreover, IBM has partnered with ecosystem allies to incorporate Granite models into a variety of offerings, enhancing options for enterprises globally.
As IBM continues to advance its AI portfolio, the company emphasizes the development of more advanced AI agent technologies that possess higher autonomy and the ability to tackle complex problems. This includes plans to roll out new AI agent features in IBM watsonx Orchestrate and expand agent capabilities across its portfolio by 2025.
