Researchers from UC Berkeley’s Sky Computing Lab have made significant strides in making reasoning AI models more accessible and affordable. On January 11, 2025, they unveiled Sky-T1-32B-Preview, a new reasoning model that boasts competitive performance against an earlier version of OpenAI’s o1 model.

Sky-T1 is distinguished as potentially the first open-source reasoning model that can be reproduced from scratch, as the team has made its training dataset and code publicly available. Remarkably, the cost of training Sky-T1 was under $450, suggesting that high-level reasoning capabilities could be achieved efficiently and cost-effectively.

Historically, training similar models often required millions of dollars. The introduction of synthetic training data has contributed to significantly lowering these costs. For reference, the recently launched Palmyra X 004 model, which was mostly trained on synthetic data, cost about $700,000 to develop.

Reasoning models, unlike traditional AI, can fact-check their responses, which reduces errors in problem-solving, particularly in fields like mathematics and science. However, they do take longer to reach conclusions, typically requiring additional seconds or minutes compared to non-reasoning models.

The team at NovaSky utilized data generated from another reasoning model, Alibaba’s QwQ-32B-Preview, for the initial training of Sky-T1, refining the data with OpenAI’s GPT-4o-mini for practical use. Training the 32-billion-parameter model involved approximately 19 hours with 8 Nvidia H100 GPUs.

In performance tests, Sky-T1 outperformed an early version of OpenAI’s o1 model on MATH500, a benchmark of challenging math problems, as well as numerous coding evaluations in LiveCodeBench. However, it did not surpass the o1 preview on more complex tests related to physics and biology.

Amidst these developments, the NovaSky team emphasized that Sky-T1 is just the beginning of their efforts. They plan to focus on creating even more efficient models with superior reasoning capabilities in the future.
