Grammarly has recently introduced a feature called “Expert Review,” which claims to enhance users’ writing by providing suggestions based on the perspectives of esteemed writers and thinkers. This new functionality was launched in August 2025 as part of a suite of AI-driven enhancements.
Expert Review operates within the sidebar of Grammarly’s writing assistant, allowing users to receive editing tips framed to sound as if they were coming from renowned authors, even those who are no longer alive. Some suggestions are purportedly from well-known tech journalists representing major publications such as The Verge, Wired, Bloomberg, and The New York Times. However, a notable omission is any input from TechCrunch, as the feature did not reference any of its team members.
Curiosity led to an experiment where an early draft was pasted into Grammarly to see if any feedback linked to TechCrunch writers would come up. Instead, the prompts suggested adding ethical considerations like Casey Newton, utilizing anecdotes for reader alignment similar to Kara Swisher, and raising overarching accountability questions akin to Timnit Gebru—none of whom contributed to this feature.
It’s crucial to point out that these figures were not actually consulted for the Expert Review or have granted their endorsement for their names to be utilized in this context. According to Alex Gay, vice president of product and corporate marketing at Grammarly’s parent company, Superhuman, mentions of these experts are based on the publicly available and widely cited nature of their works.
Grammarly clarifies in its user guide that references to experts are intended for informational purposes only and do not signify any association or endorsement from those individuals. This distinction raises an essential question: Are users genuinely receiving an “expert review,” when in fact there are no experts involved in the review process, as emphasized by historian C.E. Aubin?
This new feature draws a mix of interest and skepticism about its validity and the ethics surrounding its implementation. Users are left to navigate these complexities while utilizing Grammarly’s tools.
