Anthropic Claude: Microsoft, Google, and Amazon Ensure Availability for Non-Defense Customers
Microsoft, Google, and Amazon have confirmed that Anthropic’s AI model, Claude, will continue to be available for non-defense customers despite a recent designation by the U.S. Defense Department labeling Anthropic as a "supply chain risk." This designation came after Anthropic resisted providing unrestricted access to its technology for military applications that it deemed unsafe.
Microsoft was the first major tech company to reassure its customers that Claude would remain accessible. According to a Microsoft spokesperson, their legal team believes that the designation does not prevent Anthropic’s models from being used by clients who do not work directly with the Department of Defense.
Google echoed this sentiment, confirming that Claude would still be offered through its platforms. Reports also indicate that AWS users can continue utilizing Claude for non-defense projects. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei emphasized that the designation only affects specific contracts with the Department of Defense and does not restrict broader uses of Claude.
The Pentagon’s move to classify Anthropic as a risk typically applies to foreign entities and could limit the startup’s ability to collaborate with defense contractors. In response, Anthropic plans to legally contest this classification. Meanwhile, the company is experiencing significant growth in consumer markets as it navigates these challenges.
