Siri AI Powered by Google: A New Era for Voice Assistants, But Is the World Left Behind?

At WWDC 2026, Apple introduced the new Siri AI, a reimagined voice assistant that aims to enhance user interaction. Stacey Ford, Apple’s VP of OS Program Management, highlighted how this updated Siri aims to improve the user search experience, a feature that has faced challenges in the past. The new Siri has been completely overhauled, allowing for better multi-turn conversations, integration with users’ email and messaging apps, live query capabilities from the web, and improved task execution across applications.
In addition, Apple has launched a dedicated app for Siri, enabling seamless integration with iPhones, where users will see Siri’s activity displayed in the Dynamic Island feature. However, a significant shift in Apple’s approach emerged when it was revealed that Google’s Gemini family of models now powers the Siri AI. This collaboration signifies Apple’s reliance on an external partner, given its previous claims that it could develop competitive in-house models.
Privacy remained a key theme during the announcement. Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior VP, emphasized that user data is used solely for executing requests and can be verified externally, reiterating Apple’s commitment to privacy in AI.
The rollout of Siri AI has limitations, with the initial beta available only in English and set to exclude regions like China, where regulatory hurdles exist, and parts of the EU, where functioning capabilities will be limited to macOS and visionOS at launch. This creates a noticeable gap, especially as many potential users from the world’s fastest-growing smartphone markets such as China and various Asian languages are left with the old Siri.
The structure of the keynote indicated a strategic pivot; Apple prefaced the new features of Siri by addressing past failures, showing it as one of many updates instead of the main focus. This event also marked CEO Tim Cook’s final WWDC appearance, with a transition to John Ternus, who will take over leadership in September.
In the end, while Siri AI appears to be a significant advancement, the assistant’s foundation relies heavily on Google’s technology. The implications of this partnership could signal a shift in how Apple approaches AI development, especially considering the competitive landscape where many global tech players are aggressively advancing their AI capabilities.
