Sony Music and Warner Bros. File Lawsuit Against Anthropic for Alleged Intellectual Property Theft

Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell, along with other music publishers, have filed a lawsuit against Anthropic and its co-founders, Dario Amodei and Benjamin Mann, claiming that the AI lab engaged in an "audacious campaign of illegally torrenting, scraping, and downloading copyrighted works." This lawsuit was submitted in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California and highlights significant accusations of "blatant theft" in which Anthropic allegedly utilized thousands of copyrighted works to train its AI model, Claude.

In a statement, an Anthropic spokesperson responded, "We disagree with the publishers’ claims and we intend to defend ourselves robustly in court."

This isn’t Anthropic’s first experience with legal challenges over intellectual property. The same legal team involved in this current lawsuit previously represented Concord Music Group and Universal Music Group in a January case against Anthropic, as well as leading the Bartz v. Anthropic case. This older case saw a group of authors charging Anthropic with using copyrighted works to train its products, resulting in a $1.5 billion settlement after a ruling determined the AI lab’s methods of acquiring content through piracy were illegal, despite the legal use of copyrighted works in general.

The recent lawsuit expands on earlier accusations, alleging Anthropic’s piracy extended to illegal torrenting, facilitating the procurement of millions of book copies with lyrics and sheet music included.
