OpenClaw’s AI Assistants Take the Leap: Building Their Own Social Network!

OpenClaw’s AI assistants are now building their own social network

The AI personal assistant formerly known as Clawdbot has undergone yet another rebranding, now officially named OpenClaw. This change follows a brief period where it was called Moltbot due to a legal challenge from Anthropic, the company behind Claude AI. OpenClaw’s creator, Peter Steinberger, took precautions to ensure compliance this time, conducting trademark research and obtaining permission from OpenAI.

Steinberger described this new phase in a blog post: "The lobster has molted into its final form." He noted that while “molting” inspired its previous name, it didn’t resonate well with users. OpenClaw has quickly gained traction, attracting over 100,000 stars on GitHub, indicating significant interest in its development.

The community surrounding OpenClaw has contributed to its growth, leading to the creation of Moltbook, a unique social network for AI assistants. The platform is already drawing attention from AI researchers, including Andrej Karpathy, who praised the project as incredibly innovative. Contributors also share a variety of topics on this platform, enhancing the interactive nature of AI assistants.

After stepping back from his previous company, PSPDFkit, Steinberger returned to the AI scene with Clawdbot, which eventually evolved into OpenClaw. He recognized the expansive growth of the project and incorporated more maintainers from the open-source community to ensure its sustainability.

However, while enthusiastic about the potential of OpenClaw, Steinberger and other community leaders emphasize the importance of security. Current versions of the software are better equipped for secure use, but they caution that it remains suitable only for early adopters and technically proficient users. Regular updates to address security vulnerabilities are ongoing, with guidance for safe usage recommended.

As the project seeks to grow its user base, OpenClaw is now accepting sponsorships to fund its development. Contributors include notable figures from the tech industry who support Steinberger’s vision of accessible open-source AI tools.

Moving forward, achieving mainstream adoption will require ongoing improvements and community engagement to ensure users can safely interact with their AI assistants.
