Pony.ai Introduces Autonomous Electric Truck to Revolutionize Logistics Fleets
Pony.ai has introduced a cutting-edge autonomous electric truck aimed at logistics fleets, developed in collaboration with GAC Commercial Vehicle for optimizing freight supply chains. This vehicle was revealed at the IAA Transportation 2026 event and represents the fourth generation of Pony.ai’s Robotruck platform. Building on GAC’s T9 battery-electric truck architecture, mass production is expected to commence later this year, with the initial focus on long-haul freight, dedicated logistics corridors, and operations at ports.
He Xing, the VP of Pony.ai and head of the Robotruck business, stated that the launch of the T9 autonomous heavy-duty truck marks a significant milestone in enhancing mass production and the commercial deployment of Pony.ai’s Robotrucks. Looking forward, the collaboration with GAC will be deepened with the goal of bringing their jointly-developed autonomous trucking solutions to international markets.
The Gen-4 Robotruck is equipped with an advanced autonomous driving kit that includes nine lidars, three millimeter-wave radars, and 13 cameras, ensuring comprehensive 360-degree sensing capabilities. The cost of this hardware has drastically decreased, dropping by 70% when compared to previous models, and projections suggest a 30% reduction in transportation operating costs per ton-kilometer.
In terms of energy efficiency, the truck utilizes aerodynamic enhancements along with Pony.ai’s control algorithms, improving energy consumption by 10% relative to traditional freight trucks.
The Gen-4 Robotruck utilizes a shared central domain controller with Pony.ai’s latest generation of robotaxis, employing the integrated ‘Virtual Driver’ software. This setup includes comprehensive hardware redundancy for crucial functions such as steering, braking, and communication to ensure reliable driverless operation.
Pony.ai has been advancing its autonomous trucking initiatives since 2018 and has established a diverse fleet comprising both heavy and light-duty platforms. The company’s commercial logistics strategy encompasses partnerships with vehicle manufacturers and logistics operators dealing with bulk shipping, urban deliveries, and long-haul transportation.
After initiating domestic production this year, Pony.ai intends to extend its Robotruck operations into European and Middle Eastern markets within the next two years, leveraging established connections from prior robotaxi deployments in regions including the UAE, Qatar, Croatia, Luxembourg, Singapore, and South Korea.
